Laptop Workshop: Animation with Google Maps
Organizer: Michael Peterson, University of Nebraska at Omaha
The original Google Maps Application Programmer Interface (API) did not provide many tools to support cartographic animation. Initially, the only option available was a bouncing marker. Animations could be implemented through a significant amount of JavaScript programming to compensate for the lack of animation code within the API. In 2014, at our urging, a number of animation tools were added to the Google Maps API. The additional tools made it easier to make animated maps. This workshop examines these new tools as well as the previous JavaScript code that has been made available to facilitate map animation. Code is introduced for the depiction of flows, the inclusion of panoramas, and the representation of diffusion over space. Participants will download and change code samples to understand how the animations can be modified for their own purposes.
